Bad Weather Procedures & Notifications

A Message from leadership at Region 10 ESC:

When weather forecasters predict bad weather:

  1. We don’t KNOW if the weather will be bad or how bad it might be until it is actually occurring. Remember that COLD temperatures are not BAD WEATHER by themselves.

  2. If the weather has both cold temperatures AND precipitation THEN it creates a concern regarding traveling to the office or other work site and we may close.

  3. IF a decision about closing the Region 10 offices needs to occur, I’ll look at all the data and all of the circumstance; only then will I make a decision.  But I will wait as long as necessary to get enough information.

Here is how decisions are communicated to all staff:

  1. For the first day of a bad weather event:

    1. If Richardson ISD announces school closure or late opening Region 10 will do the exact same thing.  (RISD closes – R10 closes, etc.)  So you can watch/listen for that on local media.

    2. Region 10 could close even if RISD is open.  In that case, notification will occur through our internal systems so make sure your cell numbers, land-line phone numbers (if you still have one), and email addresses are correct in our system.

  2. For second day and onward, the Region 10 closure decision will be made independently of Richardson ISD.  Only trust our internal systems for notifications.

Notification to participants of canceled workshops is done through the Calendar of Events/ESCworks and is posted on the website.  If you also have a list-serve of emails for participants you can send a message out AFTER the decision has been made to cancel and is announced to staff.

As stated in policy, the Executive Director may decide to have employees work remote rather than completely close the Center.  Typically this is the course of action I will take so please remember to take all necessary equipment and materials home with you when there is the potential for icy road conditions.

If your regular work is located at a district/campus then you should report to work if that district/campus is open even if Region 10 is closed or on remote work.  Immediately check with your supervisor for instructions if your normal work location is closed and Region 10 is open.

Extenuating circumstances do occasionally occur, you may always contact your Director or direct supervisor for clarification of what you should do.
