Video Accessibility & Recording

Video transcripts should be 98% accurate with correct punctuation, capitalization and include speaker's names in order to be compliant with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). YouTube videos are only about 80-85% compliant, so use the YouTube Video Request form below and the Web Team will fix your video transcript prior to releasing to the public.

Tips for a Better Accessible Webinar Video Recording

  1. Announce your name (and all speakers' names) so the audience knows who you are. This is important for proper accessible video transcripts - speakers should be identified in video transcripts.

  2. Verbally describe out loud your graphs and pictures if they provide valuable information (not just decorative).
Do NOT say “Read slide” or “As depicted in slide”.
Remember that someone who is visually impaired cannot see what you're seeing, so you must 'read' or 'explain' what you see to them.

  3. Type out a detailed script and stick very closely to it. This will help you stay on track and later will make correcting closed captioning faster and easier. ALL the information on the slide should be in the script, including email addresses and links.

  4. Use proper high-color-contrast text and backgrounds in your webinar slides.

Benefits of Good Closed Captioning (CC)

Better SEO

Enlarge your audience. Be found by search engines and humans.

Think about it. Videos only "speak" when you listen to them. But when you caption and embed the transcript into the page, all those words become searchable by humans and search engines.

More Reach

Gain 20% Audience Share with captions. Even more with translations.

Captioned videos increase your addressable audience by more than 20% with the 11% hearing impaired population, 1.5 billion ESL speakers, and any viewer in a non-audio context.

More Engaged

Speaking their language results in viewer engagement and retention.

Hispanic viewers were 2x more likely to engage in Video ad units in Spanish.

More Minutes

Captioned videos result in 35% more time spent.

Interactive transcripts enable viewers to search within, navigate, and conduct research with video. Improve recall. Better for mobile too when sometimes you cannot play audio.

More Value

Increase the lifetime value of your video and the life time value of your audience.

Besides expanding your audience, language-enabled video results in improved discovery, engagement, time spent, and good will - to increase your Return on Video.
